Citations missing from JSTOR databased articles

Not a Problem

I've noticed that the articles I try to import from JSTOR never have any citation information in EndNote Click. It will directly import the PDF, but as an unrecognized reference. Here is the direct link to an example: https://www.jstor.org/stable/3765775.

Hi Tommy,

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

We rely on the Crossref index to get citation data, and this article is not indexed by them. The DOI that I found for this article in the page source is 10.2307/3765775, which if you try to look up you will find is invalid. Sadly, this is often the case for articles without indexed DOIs and in JSTOR. Let me know if you have any questions.

Best wishes,

Virag

Hi Virag,

Thanks for your reply. I don’t see that DOI listed in JSTOR, but this article is listed in Crossref.org: https://doi.org/10.1097/00005650-199312000-00006. Please let me know if I’m missing something. Thanks.

Hi Tommy,

The DOI is hidden in the page source (HTML), and it's essentially a JSTOR identifier rather than an indexed DOI.

You will see that the second part of the DOI is 3765775 which is the JSTOR ID included in the URL.

Because the 10.2307/3765775 ID is used for obtaining the paper from JSTOR, that's the metadata that's connected to this paper. Click relies on a unique identifier rather than matching the title or author name in order to look up references.

Because this DOI is not indexed in Crossref, Click can't return the reference.

If you got the article served from the publisher that uses the indexed DOI, Click could look up the reference.

Unfortunately, Click doesn't integrate with aggregators (such as ProQuest, Ebsco and Ovid) quite as well as with individual publishers. Did you manage to obtain the PDF via the link you shared?

Best,

Virag
